the old and the new (PIP)

The Teatro Comunale di Firenze, once home to the prestigious "Maggio Musicale Fiorentino", is being in part demolished and in part restored, to be turned into a mostly residential aerea. In this photo, what was once the elegant foyer, with the stairs leading to the balcony, now lit by flood lights and with a wheelbarrow parked in the shadows. In the pip, not far from the old Teatro Comunale, one of the protruding volumes of the new "Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino", built in contemporary style, catches the golden light of the setting sun. I am told the inside of the new theatre is magnificent, but the outside, in my view, is bulky and lifeless and only rescued, somewhat, in this image by the sun's golden light.

I tend to agree with you Annalia, I am not a fan of modern architecture. A superb capture in the shadows.

Thank you, HappySnapper. I don't dislike modern architecture per se. In fact, I think I might have been one of the few people who fell in love with the new Court House, a daring complex with precipitously sharp angles and bold colors. www.ipernity.com/doc/2518356/49526336/in/album/1256468
I just don't care for this particular building, at least from the outside, though I have seen pictures of the inside that reconcile me with it to a considerable extent.

Hope you are enjoying the weekend despite these troubling times!

I love the PIP with the gorgeous old house....

Annalia S. replied to Xata:

Thank you, Isabel. The "old house" in the pip is the City Sphaeristerium (a sports court for ball games like pallone col bracciale - an old game played with a leather ball and a sort of spiky wooden glove) and it is indeed an intriguing structure.

Hope you are enjoying your weekend!

What a contrast. The PIP is so interesting, Annalia....such a contrast!
HFF and have a safe week ahead...keep well in these most troubling of times.

Annalia S. replied to Diana Australis:

Thank you, Diana. Yes, not a good time at all. Infection numbers in Italy have doubled in less than a week and we seem to be heading the same way as the UK, France, Spain and other European countries that have been experiencing big surges lately. The government is adamant about not having another countrywide lockdown, but some parts of the country are on the verge of being declared "red zones". It's going to be a tough winter ...

Have a nice weekend, Diana!

Sadly, so much modern architecture tends to provoke yawning! A well composed main image (wheelbarrow and all) and, as Xata noted, the old house in the PiP is lovely.

Thank you, George. I liked the lurid colors in the gutted out foyer and thought the other photo made for an interesting contrast. As I wrote to Isabel (Xata), the "old house" in the pip is the City Sphaeristerium (a sports court for ball games like pallone col bracciale - an old game played with a leather ball and a sort of spiky wooden glove) and it is indeed an interesting structure, built in the late 1800s.
There are modern architecture buildings that I really like, but, alas, "Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino" is not one of them ... :(

Hope you are enjoying your weekend!

Quite a contrast in the PiP Annalia, which I like. An interesting main picture with the wheelbarrow :)

Annalia S. replied to Rosalyn Hilborne:

Thank you, Rosalyn. Glad somebody likes that bulky cube thing ... :) In the golden light of evening it did make for a striking effect, I must say.

Hope you are having a good weekend!

Two photos very interesting and with a text newsworthy, Annalia
The old one in recovery, which is great, and the new one with great exposure that allows a stunning effect
Many thanks for sharing!

Thank you, Judite. They are located at little more than a stone's throw from each other and it seemed strange that, as one was basking in golden light, the other was being gutted out under flood lights.
Have a great weekend!
