We (my Rick and Amanda) went to see the statue years ago right after it was refinished. It took hours to get up the winding staircase with all the people. Me holding so close to the pole the stairs wound around, I cleaned it shiney. I'm afraid of heights so when we finally got up to the crown, I took one look and raced back down the stairs! My husband thought I was nuts!
