Low Man on the Totem Pole
Nowadays, being the "Low Man on the Totem Pole" is a negative appellation, a position of little esteem. But in the eyes of the carvers, this figure was important and of high regard, because it had have powerful spirit to hold up the entire totem above it (and this one is missing part of a finger on his lower left hand; must have been a woodworker himself).
