You don't think of Leicestershire as being hilly enough to require that number of locks! But on reflection, the country is a little more than 'gently rolling', at least in places.

There is a slight twist in the wording here.. A staircase lock is unusual in that the bottom gates on one are the top gates of the next. Most canals have passing places between the individual locks.. For example www.ipernity.com/doc/2247998/47481398
