The old and the new. Merchant Navy "British India Line" waits while a modern diesel leaves Weymouth station.

The steam locomotive will then shunt its coaches back into the station to prepare for its own return journey to London.

Hi Steve ,
Your visit is much appreciated. Thank you!
I am so happy that you like the scene.
Since there is no turning facility at Weymouth, the coaches were hauled in by diesel, and then removed from the platform while the passengers enjoyed the seaside. Some hours later the 'Merchant Navy' came in tender first, shunted everything around, put the coaches back in the platform, and set off for London very late indeed!
Here it is re-united with its support coach.

Hi Nick,
Thank you so much for your very kind visit.
I am pleased you found it interesting. It was difficult to get another vantage point, since the line is in a big cutting here.. And it was only a few minutes walk from the hotel...

Best Wishes,

Hi Rainer ,
Thank you very much!
I am so happy that you like the scene. I do have another one with the steam loco leaving the station, but I picked this one for the reasons you suggest.

In fact there were quite a lot of photographers out waiting for this (plus a lot of non photographers too..!) Not a very common occurrence!
