I think this could be a lichen, Sarah. Don't worry about the blur (bokeh), it's normal in a macro photo. The foreground details stand out very nicely indeed. :-)))

Amelia is right, the background blur is normal, and in this case helps make the picture by removing attention from irrelevant items in the background.
