Riverside Museum

Glasgow

Preserved Glasgow Subway car at the Riverside Museum, its orange livery recalling the system’s long‑lived nickname, The Clockwork Orange — a nod to the circular, clock‑like loop of the world’s third‑oldest underground railway, and the bright orange trains that once circled it with mechanical regularity.

I travelled on the Glasgow Undergound to take this pic. The trains look so modern now. This was not always the case. I can remember, in the early 1970s, travelling on one of the old red trains. When near the door you could see the axel grease that lubricate the door mechanism. I got the grease all over my trousers, when I was standing near the door. I never liked that pair of trousers, anyway! After the revamp, the new livery was the one you see in the pic. This caused the nickname 'The Clockwork Oranger'. I remember when I worked in the whisky industry, I had to act as interpreter for a Frenchman, who had to conduct some business in Glasgow. This involved travelling on the Glasgow Underground. When the train arrived at the platform and he saw small it was, he fellow about laughing saying, "Le mini métro, le mini métro... ha, ha, ha". Thanks for your visit and very kind comment, Gudrun. I hope you have an excellent weekend. Kindest regards, Joe

Gudrun replied to Joe, Son of the Rock:

Better a mini Metro than none at all! We only have trams which run partly underground in the city centre and the old versions also were rather basic- though I never ruined clothes with grease;-)

Joe, Son of the Rock replied to Gudrun:

It was only a old pair of cords, and not an expensive pair of trousers.
