What grew instead the poppies?

I think barley. I don't think it is wheat. The climate can be a bit too severe for wheat (too hot and arid in summer, too cold in winter) ... but you will know these things better than I!
The poppies quickly take over when the fields are left untended as can often happen when the old generation of farmers dies off and no one is prepared to continue the gruelling work! Maybe the farm changed hands and the poppies were eradicated to bring the land back into pruduction.
All just guesswork!
