Very beautiful place. I think it was Churchill who said English and Americans are two peoples separated by a common language. What do you mean by "sucked in shipping"?

I use that famous quote sometimes when I teach the many (but insignificant) differences between British English and American English to my students, Ron!
However you have got me stumped here!
What aspect of the verb 'to suck' isn't clear to you?
I can't see where there is any difference? If I had a glass of something to drink and a straw, I could demonstrate the meaning. There must be some connotation that is getting in the way of understanding here and, as a teacher of English, I would love to know what it might be!??

Here.. you will hear the expression (or similar) "That sucked" or "That really sucked" or "That sucks" . Basically meaning "That was awful" / "That is awful/terrible downright annoying" etc

That makes it different in meaning

Thanks Pam. But this other meaning is also known in Britain (having crossed the Atlantic some decades ago). Are you telling me that the verb we Brits use, in it's more usual meaning (for us at any rate), is unknown in the US? If so, I can quite understand Ronald Losure's puzzlement! However, I would be surprised!
