From above Navrax Point to North Cliffs.
Typical Cornish coastal scenery. Hell's Mouth is mid shot. It simply sucked in shipping!

However you have got me stumped here!
What aspect of the verb 'to suck' isn't clear to you?
I can't see where there is any difference? If I had a glass of something to drink and a straw, I could demonstrate the meaning. There must be some connotation that is getting in the way of understanding here and, as a teacher of English, I would love to know what it might be!??

Here.. you will hear the expression (or similar) "That sucked" or "That really sucked" or "That sucks" . Basically meaning "That was awful" / "That is awful/terrible downright annoying" etc
That makes it different in meaning

Behind me is Godrevy lighthouse but although it helped, it often wasn't enough in the foulest weather.

Yes, and of course, wrecking was a major, if unsavoury, business!
