Nel masso sono incise 224 croci e 20 coppelle. Esso è considerato uno dei più importanti massi coppellari con segni cruciformi dell'Arco alpino. Una delle croci, la più grande, si pensa che indicasse il vecchio confine tra Brione s/M, Contra e Mergoscia. Si crede altresì che l'usanza di incidere croci fosse il modo più semplice per cristianizzare un luogo mentre le coppelle possono essere interpretate in svariati modi. Uno dei più ricorrenti spiega che esse potrebbero simboleggiare il disco solare e che quindi abbiano a che fare con un antico culto del sole. Un prof. di storia crede plausibile una datazione per le coppelle risalente a 3000 anni fa mentre le croci potrebbero essere state incise nel Medio Evo. Magari, aggiungo io, in contrapposizione al rito “pagano” del sole.

On the boulder are engraved 224 crosses and 20 cups. It is considered one of the most important boulders with cross-shaped signs of the Alpine Ridge. One of the largest crosses, is thought to indicate the old border between Brione s/ Minusio, Contra and Mergoscia. It is believed that the use of engraving crosses was the easiest way to Christianize a place while cups can be interpreted in various ways. One of the most recurring ones explains that the coups could symbolize the solar disc and therefore they maybe have to do with an ancient sun cult. A prof. of history believes plausible that the cups are about 3000 years old while the crosses may have been engraved in the Middle Ages. Perhaps in opposition to the pagan rite of the sun.
