Quokkas
Ces petits animaux peuplent par milliers l'île de Rottnest, baignée par l'Océan Indien, qui se situe au large de Fremantle (Western Australia).
En reconnaissant cette terre en 1696, les marins d'un bateau hollandais, commandé par le capitaine de Vlamingh, furent les premiers Occidentaux à être confrontés à des marsupiaux. Ils s'imaginèrent que les "quokkas" étaient des rats, et baptisérent l'ïle "Rott Nest", ce qui veut dire "Nid à Rats

These small animals inhabit by thousands the island of Rottnest, bathed by the Indian Ocean, which is located off Fremantle (Western Australia).
Recognizing this land in 1696, the sailors of a Dutch ship, commanded by the captain Vlamingh, were the first Westerners to be confronted with marsupials. They imagined that the "quokkas" were rats, and baptized the island "Rott Nest", which means "Nest to Rats"
