Bressanone/Brixen

This man sat at a table next to us. No, I’m not a racist, but IMHO it’s very plain to see that he is Dutch; and no, we haven’t made his acquaintance...

If we hear people talking Dutch in a foreign country, we always try not to be there... (It gets even worse if they’re talking double Dutch.)

Of course, I’m proud to be a Dutchman, but we’ve been away so long that we have gained some distance, and don’t approve of everything we see. The same in Germany: I don’t think that bei uns ist alles besser, on the contrary, I feel more Dutch in Germany than I do in the Netherlands. In a way, I’m homeless; in another, more positive way, citizen of the planet Earth.
Things spectacularly change when there’s a football match between the Netherlands and Germany: in that case, the Dutch team must win...

Of this you can be sure: I won’t return to Holland for medical care –at least, not until German medical care has sunk to a Dutch level (just a matter of time, I fear).
True, I have kept my home town dentist, but that’s because I wouldn’t have one otherwise (I think it’s perverse to look for a dentist spontaneously when you don’t have toothache). My GP should still be in Leiden, where I’ve studied; I don’t know if he’s still alive, though. Yes, you could say I’m a healthy person! :-)

The secret of my success! I’m afraid, though, that my liver isn’t the healthiest part of me... ;-)
