The church honors the local soldiers fallen in WW II (no comment). What struck me was this:


“Please don’t sprinkle the statue with Holy Water. Thank you.”

It is true, I’m always very much aware of originating from an occupied country when I see things like this... It’s only natural to mourn losses, regardless of regime or cause. And I know enough about life and this country not to condemn each and every soldier who fought for Nazi Germany. I’m convinced that most of them were poor suckers. Well, I admit that wouldn’t be a good text for a monument, but I wouldn’t stress their heroism either.
What stuns me, isn’t the request itself, but the fact that it was considered necessary...
