"Le cygne menacé" (Jan Asselijn - 1650)

Un cygne défend farouchement son nid contre un chien. Au cours des siècles suivants, cette scène a été interprétée comme une allégorie politique : on voyait dans le cygne blanc l'homme d'État néerlandais Johan de Witt (assassiné en 1672), protégeant le pays contre ses ennemis.
