The historic theatre was opened in 1886 as the Pressburg City Theatre and only later became the Slovak National Theatre after 1920.
It was designed by the famous Viennese theatre architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, who also created theatres in cities like Vienna, Zagreb and Odessa.
Architecturally it is a Neo‑Renaissance / Neo‑Baroque “ring theatre” with a plush red‑and‑gold interior and seats for just over 600 spectators.
The opening performance in 1886 was “Bánk bán,” an opera by Hungarian composer Ferenc Erkel, reflecting the multi‑ethnic character of old Pressburg.
