As we continue our walk eastwards along the River Tyne here on the Newcastle side we come to this impressive new bridge. Spanning the River Tyne between Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead, with the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art on the Gateshead side of the river.
It is the world's first and only tilting bridge, often nicknamed the "Winking (or Blinking) Eye Bridge" because of its curved shape and how it rotates to let boats pass underneath. The top arch drops right-ways towards the water lifting the fenced footbridge up 45 degree keeping the common hinged joint where they meet at the start and finish of the footbridge. It was opened to the public in 2001.
