Just like in many parts of Europe we have old Almshouses still standing. This one is also called the Stydd Almshouse and was built in 1728 following a bequest in the will of local landowner John Shireburne to house five poor persons and a local schoolteacher.

“Almshouses are charitable homes that provide affordable, secure accommodation for people who are in financial need, usually older people, although some almshouses also house younger adults with specific needs or local connections. They have existed in Britain for over 1,000 years, with some dating back to the medieval period. They were originally established by wealthy individuals, churches, guilds, or charities to provide housing for the poor.”
