A trip to the Lakes

"The Lakes" are what we British often call "The Lake District" in our North West county of Cumbria. We were off on a one weeks stay up in the heart of this area near Hawkhead. To get there we have decided to cross England's largest lake "Lake Windermere' at its narrowest point via the old cable pulled car-ferry. You can see that hanging down into the water here. The first cable pulled ferry here was introduced in 1870.
The first PiP shows the view from the road here looking north and the other PiP shows the view from the inside of the car as as we cross on board the ferry.

Enjoy the day.

Très intéressant. Nous n'avons pas cela. Il existe encore des bacs mais c'est un peu différent.

Thanks for this Pearl. There must be many of this type of ferry across the world I think. This one is said to finish completely soon.

A highly interesting old ferry! I had a look and in Germany we actually have over 60 of such ferries crossing rivers- I didn't know that.
A week in the lakes is a joy in any weather and in December you are free of the tourist hordes:-)

Herb Riddle replied to Gudrun:

I have a feeling that we crossed the Rhine once or twice on such ferries Gudrun. We certainly crossed The Seine in France with several of these. This one, unfortunately is under threat of closure as it not finically viable, I think. We had a great deal of rain but some good photo days despite all that so some treats to be posted here.

Herb Riddle replied to TOZ:

Thanks for this Gordon. We were living in fear and trepidation of the roads being flooded en-route from here on but it was not to be. A nice little 8 minute cruise here. The weather was to get far worse before it got better.

Herb Riddle replied to Loose_Grip/Pete:

Hi Pete, the weather actually went worse just a few hours at arriving at our cottage, however we did have one splendid day of perfect landscape weather and a couple of days when it stopped raining for a couple of hours allowing us to explore.

I was going to say that this road looks badly flooded :-)))

A lovely little series Herb, captured in nice light, despite the grey sky..!!

I hope you had a lovely break, and that the weather wasn't too bad..!!

Herb Riddle replied to Keith Burton:

Haha, yes it would be bad if it was like this. In some countries it is so! A great break despite the torrential rains so quite a lot of photos taken, considering.
