Lapwing sightings

To accompany my previous posting of lapwings over Harrop Edge here we have two more captures. The main photo shows how they look on the ground which is quite different from when they are in the air. So much so that it is hardly believable that it is the same bird. We see here (on higher magnification) the distinctive crown plumage.

Lapwing: Vanellus vanellus, also known as the peewit in imitation of its display calls, its common name describes its wavering flight. Its black-and-white appearance and round-winged shape in flight make it distinctive, even without its splendid crest. This familiar Farmland, bird has suffered significant declines recently and is now a Red List species.

A great find Herb and some lovely photos...........I especially like the in-flight shots in the PiPs. Very nicely done.

I hadn't realised they were on the Red List until they mentioned it on Springwatch the other evening. Such a shame as they used to be pretty common down here!

Have a good week and take care!

Herb Riddle replied to Keith Burton:

Hi Keith. A rare sighting for me and so I was well pleased. I knew that they are quite rare nowadays as it is so long since I have seen any. It was good to see at least three pairs doing their courting flying dances. Great that you enjoyed them too.

Best Wishes. Herb
