The Pike, Planets and Stars

A rather rare occurrence happened this week when lots of our Solar System planets were almost in a line with the moon too.

Here I am at my local Hartshead Pike monument looking up at the moon. The bright ‘star’ to the bottom left of that is actually the planet Jupiter. If we carried on left from the moon –just beyond my picture we would see another bright star which was in fact the planet Mars. Just at the bottom right corner of the moon is the Pleiades Star cluster (7 sisters) with the planet Uranus to the right of that. Traveling to the bottom right of the shot is another bright object –the planet Venus and if we were to travel a little more to the right and down out of my shot we would see the planet Saturn. Of course we also see the constellation of Orion with its famous belt here to the left of the moon What a fantastic night sky once we know what we are looking at!
See PiP for Mars view.

Enjoy the day.

This Is great some thing I did not get a chance to try. It was far more important to Baby the new camera till I get use to it... My nights where over before they started so I will take the shot. great to see you have not lost the info and the feel of being under a night sky.

Herb Riddle replied to Steve Paxton:

Good to see you observing one of my night sky shots again Steve. As you know, I rarely get to see any stars at all near my home nowadays because of a constant cloud cover of sorts. It was really great to see these planets all together, although I never got to see Saturn as it dipped under the brighter western horizon. Even Uranus was only visible with the longer exposure but the other planets all visible with the human eye.
Nothing like as awe-inspiring as your deep-space close-ups but this works for me. Very happy you liked it and sorry you missed it but maybe you still have a chance even now.

Cheers. Herb

Herb Riddle replied to TOZ:

Always good to see one of my images getting a golden star from you Gordon. It takes some effort -believe me to go out in a freezing (1C) night to try to get photos like this. In practice the only advantage of going up here was to get Venus without buildings in the way and also to get a pictorial shot of the Pike at the same time. It worked OK I think.

I had no idea you were into this sort of photography Herb...........it's something I've never tried.

This is a fascinating shot...........I've seen on the news that this phenomenon was happening, but there no chance of me getting out to a dark enough area nowadays.

You done a great job here.........and provided a lot of added information and pictures for us as well. Very nicely done sir! ⭐️

Herb Riddle replied to Keith Burton:

Once again you delight me with your comment Keith. A glance at my Night Album might remind you that the night sky is not a stranger to me. Some effort required to get my shots but I am pleased at the results of that phenonium, which in fact happens more regular than one would think. Great that you appreciated the extra effort in making the info available to you too.

Cheers for the star. Herb
