Schönbühel Castle

As we continue along the Danube in Austria to our next destination of Melk we sail by this grand looking building. It is in fact Schönbühel Castle.
Constructed in the 12th century it is a great example of medieval architecture with a fascinating history. It was designed to guard the entrance to the Wachau Valley, a vital trade route along the Danube. In the 19th century, it underwent significant restoration into a neo-Gothic residence. Its current appearance reflects centuries of architectural evolution, blending Gothic, Romanesque, and Baroque elements.

It was very nice to see but we only had it in our sights for about 10 minutes as we quickly sailed past in the heavy currents here. Great Great you liked another of my castles.

That must have been a difficult build back in the day........given that location. The castle looks wonderful sitting up on the cliffs, especially against the blue sky. You've captured it in superb detail...........and it's definitely worth viewing large.

I like the way the walls of the castle blend into the underlying rock face and how the foliage has grown up around it.

It sounds like it has been around for some time Keith and I suspect the keepers here made a lot of money with their tolls. There are coach trips to this place and so the inside must be good to see too. Glad you liked it.
