The St Gotthard Pass

A 2013 look at this famous pass showing the old twisty road down to the municipality of Airolo in the canton of Ticino Switzerland. This was taken from the bigger newer road which runs to the same place. We are on the way back to Britain from Italy and have just travelled north up to this point from Airolo. We continue upwards for a some distance from here before plunging down the other side towards Lake Lucern (Vierwaldstättersee) still in Switzerland. Of course the tunnel running directly under here is a far more convenient way to travel to both places but.....

The Gotthard Pass or St. Gotthard Pass at 2,106 m is a mountain pass in the Alps traversing the Saint-Gotthard Massif and connecting northern Switzerland with southern Switzerland. It is 26km (16 miles) long.

Herb Riddle replied to aNNa schramm:

Traveling the old road must have been good as even the modern one is very twisty. Glad this brought back good memories I hope.

Great picture of this iconic road. I think that I may have seen it on top gear! It must have been great to drive on it.

Herb Riddle replied to Chris Bowness:

Hi Chris, glad you liked this one. There are several Alpine passes like this and so it may have been any that you saw, but this is perhaps The Classic -I don't know. We did not drive on that narrow road which on here looks to be one way only but on the alternative modern much wider road that allowed coaches to go on (We were on one of those). We are here just on a layby at the edge of that road with a restaurant stop just a few hundred yards further up.

Ha, ha.........probably the most convoluted leading line I've seen in a while Herb :-))

It travels across a beautiful mountain landscape. which you've captured very nicely. I like the different green tones and it's good to see the cars on the road for scale.

Sie folgt stellenweise dem alten Saumpfad, wo Goethe nach Italien wanderte.
