York Minster at sunset

Here we see part of the south edifice of the famous cathedral of York showing off it most beautiful architectural features in this late winter afternoon light. We had walked past earlier but this light was far more attractive. There are really too many superlatives to describe this all dominating homage to God and man, suffice to say that this building began in 1220 and took 250 years to complete. An earlier Anglo-Saxon church standing here was opened in 637AD. It is dedicated to St Peter.Best full screen.

The Pip (adjacent photo) shows the choir just before Evening song.

Enjoy the day.

Herb Riddle replied to TOZ:

Hi Gordon and thanks for this. We were walking atop the town walls when I noticed the sun lighting up the Minster. As we rushed over there for a better view the sun went down further but I managed to grab this quickly with my phone before getting my Nikon on the job. The Nikon shot looks quite different as it omits the phone auto edits. Good to have both the DSLR and the phone as the phone has a wider angle when required. Even so I don't think I shall be throwing my Nikon away yet.

Cheers. Herb

What a magnificent looking cathedral Herb.........captured in glorious (dare I say heavenly) light, especially on the top half. I love the colour and details of the stonework.........and recommend viewing large.

Great to have some people in shot for scale...........and I would echo TOZ's remarks about this superb phone shot!

A lovely shot of the choir in the PiP.........also showing that the interior of the cathedral is as impressive as the outside.

Herb Riddle replied to Keith Burton:

It is a most impressive sight especially in this kind of light, the stone having a light sandstone appearance that glows golden in the sunset. I agree with you that the people here give scale and humanity to this. The choir again was taken with the phone in a very quick movement. Well recommended if you ever get up here.

Best Wishes. Herb

Superb picture, Herb. It actually makes me sad as I've been there but didn't pay much attention. Your picture tells me I should have!
