The Kylerhea ferry

A twenty minute ferry crossing takes cars and pedestrians alike from main land Scotland Glenelg to the Isle of Skye hamlet of Kylerhea. A rather unique craft as the entire car deck is on a turntable and is used at both ends to embark and disembark. I even got the impression that the turntable was turned entirely by hand too after watching it being manhandled around to be locked straight . I am on Skye here and looking up Loch Alsh with the mainland on my right. From here there is a gruelling road trip before reaching the main roads of Skye.

I wonder if it’s the last turntable ferry?
I’ve never been over this one but remember the turntable ferries on other routes. The first time we went to the Isle of Arran the central section of the car deck of a larger ferry than this was a turntable.

Herb Riddle replied to Colin Ashcroft:

Can't be many about now. I have a idea that we went on one crossing the Seine in France just a few years back but my memory might be wrong there ! Must be a long time back when you went on that ferry to Arran.

An innovative ferry..............essential for awkwardly shaped jetties and the like I suspect.

A lovely view up the loch from where you are standing in the beautiful and slightly hazy sunshine.

Beautifully captured Herb..!!

Nice to see the shot in the PiP again.

Glad you liked the ferry and the ferry view Keith. The view both directions was pretty good from here.

Colin Ashcroft replied to Herb Riddle:

Our first family holiday on Arran was 1966 and it looks the cars were lifted in on a hoist then - I don’t remember that but we were probably on board by foot while that happened. So 1969 must have been when it changed the MV Glen Sannox II was converted for Linkspan in that period. The new ferry for Calmac is also called Glen Sannox the third with the name.
