The night skies of Somerset

Looking north across the Bristol Channel towards South Wales from Porlock, Somerset.
We are looking towards Ursa Major just above the lit tree with Ursa Minor a little higher, the Milky Way is just about viewable from the bottom right towards the top.

A 11mm, 15 sec exposure at F3.5, 1600 ISO. (The 11mm on my Nikon DX crop sensor delivers a Field of view 90°x70°)

The PiP gives a better idea of what we are looking at, showing the constellations at the exact same coodinates, date and time. Thanks to stellarium.org

Hi Gordon. Taken on my last British holiday. I was looking for an opportunity to post this and the CWP provided it. I was hoping to catch the whole Milky Way but it was not to be. ~ Not as stunning as your entry but I like it.

So glad you liked this image from down your way. Very happy too that you found my PiP map informative. I often use Stellarium to see what is above me in the rare night skies that I see nowadays.

Thank you Markus. It was most gratifying to get this. I was only disappointed not to get the Milky Way clearer.

Best Wishes. Herb

Herb not matter how you feel about the shot in the scheme of things this is a brilliant shot. Top marks for some interest to the sky as a foreground that gives the sky some scale. The fact you got to see the stars and where ready to jump in a catch a shot says a whole lot. all the info you need to call on and being able to work in the dark. I think you totally underestimate the shot and the plan from stellarium only brings it alive a bit more. The fact you have never given in but try and plan a shot or two no matter what clouded or not the interest is still there. Glad to see this in the CWP all the very best.

Herb Riddle replied to Steve Paxton:

Steve, your comment here moves me. Like you, when I see the heavens like this, full of stars it lights up my heart. You know already, if I saw more I would attempt to capture it all. No - I will never give up trying to catch them and I always take pleasure in seeing yours.

Thanks again for your encouragement and help.

Happy 2014 to you and your family. Herb
