The mirages are quite something! I first saw something like this in the Patagonian steppe. The cyclist must be mad indeed....

Steve Paxton replied to Gudrun:

This was not a hot day by any means the mirage would be even more in summer heat. this part of Australia is not one I would like to even think of on a bike let alone to contemplate this in summer on a bike. the distances between road houses is quite a bit well over 250km between each.

Dangerous road for Cyclists ~ dead boring road for drivers

Steve Paxton replied to Nick Weall:

Nick the shot I wanted I was not able to get the longest straight road 90 miles dead straight and nearly dead flat as well as we went through at night. there is just so many road sections dead straight as you can see by all the PIP's on all the photos.

not a place I would like to be on a cycle too much could go wrong out there very fast . we saw 6 of them on the road on there own not some thing I would take up.....

I'd open a hot dog stall at the side.

Steve Paxton replied to David G Johnson:

You have to ask yourself just where else that they could land in safety and there is enough parts that are straight enough an flat. as the planes are small I would think just on the normal road surface not strengthened underneath. this was the first we came across but not the last thats for sure.

hot dog stand you would get the attention of all the flies and plenty of sun but no customers.

David G Johnson replied to Steve Paxton:

Incredible !... I can't visualise a road of 90 miles dead straight... but of course Australia is one big country. It must be quite an experience driving some of those roads over there.

Steve Paxton replied to Diana Australis:

That Is so true even myself while i have flown this many times this was something I really enjoyed. I looked at the trip with the photographers eye and saw so much. I thought that just a few photos with PIPs was the best way to go dont make it too long for those not really interested.

Hi Steve,

Thank you for sharing another great set of pics from your journey. It must have been a great adventure! Something we Europeans can't comprehend...
As for the cyclist.. Well, we hear stories of people stranded in the outback with no water.. I would imagine a consumption of a couple of gallons a day, from WHERE?

Best Wishes
Peter
