I'm not sure we could see the Milky way here, maybe in Summer, in any case there is always too much light. I love the photo.

Steve Paxton replied to Daniela Brocca:

Daniela we are lucky we dont have to go too far out to get dark skies. we have a few months to go to get the milky way up completely. this is just the start. glad to bring this view to you. Steve

Wow, your southern skies are fantastic! I think those must be the Magellanic clouds to the right!

Steve Paxton replied to Gudrun:

Gudrun thank you we are lucky to have a lot of black as we are a very isolated city. i suggest if you can ever try this do so. i have made the EXIF data visible for you as well. you are 100% correct that is the two Magellanic clouds , yes i am still learning what is up there. Steve

Thanks for showing the EXIF! I gather it's basically the same as with aurora photography- go completely manual, wide aperture, high ISO. Your exposure time is relatively long yet there are no star trails!
How do you like the Samyang? I need a new ultra wide angle lens for full format and that means either renting an expensive one or buying an affordable one...

Steve Paxton replied to Gudrun:

Gudrun this is a lens worth owning if you own a Nikon as the AE version is chipped so the lens communicates with the camera.

i suggest you look through the tag. killer lens @ <$400 nikon's 14-24 is $2500 here.

But i fully recommend you use lens PT to correct distortion if you use for buildings. Great lens i 100% recommend if you are old school and can follow the focus of manual rather than auto.

Steve Paxton replied to Gudrun:

Gudrun Fx 500/ 14mm = 35.7 seconds so my 30.4 is on the conservative side but worth it.

Gudrun replied to Steve Paxton:

Thanks Steve! Lightroom has lens profiles plus a perspective correction tool (automatic and manual)- quite handy!
