La Cattedrale di Amalfi è un complesso architettonico che comprende due basiliche comunicanti, una cripta inferiore, la scalea che conduce all’atrio di ingresso, il campanile e il Chiostro del Paradiso.

Il nucleo originario del Duomo di Amalfi è da ricercare nella più antica basilica del “Crocifisso” esposta a nord con l’ingresso ad ovest e l’altare che guarda verso est. L’impianto del Duomo risale alla fine del IX secolo e si può facilmente individuare quando ci si porta sulla navata più grande, mentre quella laterale a destra funge anche da collegamento con l’altra basilica.

Il Duomo è dedicato a S. Andrea Apostolo e dal 987 è cattedrale Arcivescovile, mentre per stabilire con certezza l’origine della diocesi di Amalfi possiamo affidarci ad una lettera che Papa Gregorio Magno inviò nel 596 d.c. al rettore delle Chiese della Campania con cui richiamava il vescovo della Civitas Amalfitana ad alloggiare in sede.

Amalfi Cathedral is an architectural complex comprising two communicating basilicas, a lower crypt, the staircase leading to the entrance atrium, the bell tower and the Paradise Cloister.

The original core of Amalfi Cathedral is to be found in the older basilica of the 'Crucifix' facing north with the entrance facing west and the altar looking east. The layout of the cathedral dates back to the end of the 9th century and can be easily identified when one walks up the larger nave, while the side aisle to the right also serves as a link to the other basilica.

The cathedral is dedicated to St Andrew the Apostle and has been an archiepiscopal cathedral since 987, while to establish with certainty the origin of the Amalfi diocese we can rely on a letter that Pope Gregory the Great sent in 596 A.D. to the rector of the Churches of Campania in which he called the bishop of the Civitas Amalfitana to stay in the seat.
