Why they're called wood ducks

I saw a pair of wood ducks "land" on the far corner of the pond. I watched for a long time, expecting them to appear on the open water. Walking into the forest on the other side of the pond, I heard their voices among the trees. The forest is rather dense, so I was able to get only a few photos of them.

Danke schön, Ingrid. Noch schwieriger wird es, wenn die Bäume alle Blätter haben.

Nearest I have seen a duck in a tree was actually an Egyptian Goose, I always thought webbed feet were a hindrance though the Egyptian Goose has these with a small protruding toe.

Ronald Losure replied to HappySnapper:

This is the only common species here that perches in trees. There are also a couple of species of whistling-ducks that live a little further south.

What a cute shot. I've never seen one in a tree. Their name does suit them. :)
