Super Mario, according to legend, was created after Mario Segale, an Italian‑American landlord who rented warehouse space to a very behind‑on‑rent Nintendo of America. One day, Segale is said to have stormed into the office and firmly demanded his overdue rent, creating a scene that was hard to forget. His forceful visit, together with a name and appearance that already sounded like they belonged to a cartoon character, left a lasting impression on the staff. Their arcade hero in Donkey Kong was still called the rather uninspired “Jumpman.” As the story goes, they began referring to him as “Mario” in Segale’s honour, and the name stayed.
