Cross-country skiing in Sirdal

When we lived in Norway I had an invitation from some members of the 'Petroleum Wives Club' to go cross-country skiing. I accepted but told the women that had never skied and didn't intend to try. Not deterred one of the group brought along her son's ski boots and skis and I was duly fitted out. I did try - honestly - on the first day, but to me the effort required together with the fact that they were missing out on such gorgeous scenery, made me realise that sort sort of sport wasn't for me. So on the second day I went out with the group wearing ordinary boots fitted with 'Yaktrax', and had a wonderful day out with my camera, at that time a superb little Nikon D40. One of the cheapest and best SLR cameras I've ever had, and had one of the best trips I have ever experienced..

A lovely photo and a great story to go with it. I've never tried cross-country skiing, but I used to watch some of the Royal Marines on HMS Intrepid while we were in Norway, and it looked like far too much like hard work........mind you, they didn't have any choice..!!

I've worn Yaktrax in the snow though, and they made life much easier!

I do like this photo Amelia and the story too. Yes, sometimes a simple walk or treck in your own time and space with a camera overrides everything. I must admit though, in my ski holiday days, I skied with my SLR bouncing around my neck taking photos whilst shooting down red runs. Horses for courses! Thanks for sharing.

Good luck in the CWP. Herb

ps -I have never tried cross country skiing nor walking with 'YakTrax'. Maybe I missed something!

A great snowy scene and interesting notes,Amelia. I tried a little skiing, but it really wasn't my scene either.

Fine shot and interesting notes Amelia. Learned to ski (downhill) while living in Norway 1960-1962. Very much enjoyed it. Ice skating, on a small frozen lake, not so much!

Best regards, Doug
