Filling up the winter store

Sciurus carolinensis, the grey squirrel, a native to eastern North America was widely introduced to certain places around the world, Europe in particular, is now regarded as an invasive species, and a pest. Gray squirrels were first introduced to Britain in the 1870s, as fashionable additions to estates. They are found widely in woodlands and gardens in the UK and can take a significant proportion of supplementary food from bird feeders, preventing access and reducing use by wild birds.

They are pests, but I'm sure you will all agree that they look very appealing

I understand that they are an invasive species and that they are considered pests...........but I love them and find them fascinating and fun to watch. We have had grey squirrels visiting our garden for years now and regularly see babies each year. We're quite happy putting food out for them (and the birds).

Anyway, this is a delightful shot Amelia...............you've captured it in a classic pose and the detail is excellent too. I like the little catch-light in its eye!

They are an invasive species here in the west as well, driving out or killing the native squirrels. As you say, they take most of the food from the bird feeders if they have opportunity, but are incredibly smart and can get to almost anything that offers food.

A cracking capture of this 'pest' Amelia, love it. I think human activity has probably reduced the wild bird population in the UK far more than the grey squirrel.

HFF, enjoy your weekend
