British Railways

SC105 - Logo

This logo might have been the pride of the country at one point, but these days our rail system is fragmented, and not working properly Billions of pounds have been spent on the HS2 which was meant to connect London (the main concern) to all places north. The length of the new railway has been reduced substantially since it was first announced in 2013. It was originally to split into eastern and western branches north of Birmingham Interchange forming a Y configuration. The most northerly point of the eastern branch of the Y would have been a connection to the East Coast Main Line south of York. There was to be a branch to a terminus in Leeds and a connection to the Midland Main Line. The most northerly point of the western branch of the Y would have been a connection to the West Coast Main Line south of Wigan. There would have been a branch to a terminus in Manchester and a connection to the West Coast Main Line at Crewe. Between November 2021 and October 2023 the project was progressively cut until only the London to Handsacre and Birmingham section remained.

If I wanted to get to London, I'd have to catch a bus. once every 2 hours, to Shrewsbury, find a parking space, and eventually get onto a train to Euston. I have always been able to do this, so no improvement, although apparently it could be 20 minutes quicker .... .

Oears soap logo

The first PiP is not a logo for fruit, but an old logo for Pears Soap. Recycling logo

The second PiP is clearly the recycling logo, but it's a really useful service offering to recycle sports gear.

I think the old British Railways logo was quite impressive................I wonder if this new Government with recycle it for the new Great British Railways?

I love the old Pears Soap logo.........this sign looks original and they sell for a lot of money nowadays.

I don't think there's anything particularly memorable about the recycling logo though.

Three nicely captured photos Amelia.

Shame that the BR railway system is not so good. A splendid history though and equally splendid logo.

Love the traditional logos, they are so beautifully elaborate! The modern one is more utilitarian but very clear.

Haha, if you have follwed the reporting during the Euros you'll know that our railways now are as bad as yours...;-) For the next half year (propbably longer) due to track closures I won't be able to reach Frankfurt airport by train, at least not reliably to catch a flight.

Greetings, Amelia.

Great minds, as you say !
Someone I used to work with referred to that logo as "ferret & dartboard" ... and I prefer the older one.
Hopefully, the recent changes in Downing Street may result in some good developments - including shaking up the railways and other public services, so that they run for "our benefit" not just a few shareholders.

A great series of these logos, Amelia. Interesting notes about the demise of British Railways , I thought I read somewhere that your new government has a policy to re-establish them from the fragmented current state.

Using Leicester station rail journey times could be improved by more destinations that do not involve changing trains but with the different companies that's not going to happen.
To me HS2 was always a complete waste it would have passed through Leicestershire but not stopped, if it is only going to Birmingham why are they still working on it in the Lichfield area?
Birmingham was a dead end, the area bing used for Birmingham station could have been used to replace New Street which has to be the worst station n the country

The HS2 saga is very depressing. The birthplace of main line railways is unable to build them today! Great logo though!

Le logo pour le savon pears est spectaculaire. La degadation de votre système ferroviaire vient-il de la privatisation des chemins de fer? Intéressant.
