The whole thing is the air intake for a jet engine, Sarah, and you'll find these on the wings of jet planes. The centre part is the nose cone which is surrounded by the inlet guide vanes. I took this photo in Cosford Air Museum and this aircraft part was a separate entity on the floor in one of the hangars

Fantastic, it makes for a great abstract! Looking at the photo for a longer time my eyes start playing me tricks and I'm getting unsure whether it's concave or convex;-)
