HFF to you all

The Iron Bridge that crosses the River Severn in Shropshire. Opened in 1781, it was the first major bridge in the world to be made of cast iron, and was greatly celebrated after construction owing to its use of the new material. Tolls for pedestrians were collected until 1950.

A 1923 reports suggested that the main span of the bridge was in poor condition, and the bridge should be used by vehicles no heavier than 2 tonnes. It is now closed to all but pedestrians and cyclists.

The PiP shows the toll charges.

Great shot.
Interesting Pip. Even the Royal Family had to pay the toll!
Best wishes, Andy

Amelia replied to Andy Rodker:

No-one is exempt from taxes in the UK, Andy, unless they're very devious and have a good accountant.

Philip Hammond could have added on cyclists and pedestrians to his Budget yesterday. Another missed opportunity.

Amelia replied to Steve Bucknell:

Please keep the fact that I have a carriage of four from Philip Hammond, Steve, and I drive over twice a day.. If he ever finds out, I'll owe 3 shillings per day, and I'll be insolvent. Of course, no-one would catch me actually walking over this bridge. Perish the thought.

I'd heard of this bridge. Marvellous that it wasn't scrapped so some 'modern' replacement could be built. HFF, and best wishes for the weekend, Amanda.
