The Burgh School, St.Andrews

I attended this school from the age of 9 - 11. My teacher was Miss Gray and she was very strict. I learned the hard way how to pay attention in history lessons, as well as many other things.

This looks a nice old building! Yes, in those days teachers were allowed to be strict.
We had a 70 year old teacher who used the cane on unruly pupils. He was already pensioned and they fetched him back because they had not enough teachers. We learned a lot!

I wasn't taught by a man throughout the whole of my school career, Gudrun. It was a revelation when I finally went to Uni.

Miss Gray used a leather strap (A tawse), a thong or a whip - a common implement used for corporal punishment. It was used for educational discipline, primarily in Scotland. Always used on the palm of the hand, the one not used for writing. I only felt the tawse in history lessons. ;-)

Gudrun replied to Amelia:

Yes, our teacher also used the cane on the palm of the hand - for girls. The boys got a hiding on the backside;-) Only one mother once complained and he told her if she had done this early enough he wouldn't have to do it. That boy later ended up a petty criminal and drug dealer...

Most of my primary school teachers also had canes. I suspect your Miss Grey was something like my Miss Beale - she was very strict when it came to daydreaming (my problem) but did get results.
