Utility Directory
Just found this book put out by the old Federal Power Commission (now FERC).

An excellent source of information - lists ALL the IOUs and munis as well as those coops that were in existence as of 1940.

For one, I finally verified that Central Gas & Electric Co. (aka "Cengas") and Central Electric & Telephone were one and the same.

Great book. Thank you for sharing. One interesting thing I noted in this book is that many cities back then where one utility covers presently where actually individual utilities back in the day. For example, in Massachusett's I saw "Middleborough Gas and Electric Department" for Middleborough, and "Taughton Municipal Lighting Plant" for Taunton, which are now covered by National Grid and appear to all have fairly old transmission and distribution poles with the same specs.

It seems that many munis sold out after connecting to IOUs for wholesale power supply and realizing that the IOU could serve the residents at a lower rate than what the muni was asking (in the early days some towns saw up to a 40% reduction in rates after selling their municipal system to an IOU).
