As some of you may have seen, Skype is currently facing a major outage of their login service... From their website, anyone can read:
(...) Our engineering team has determined that it’s a software issue. We expect this to be resolved within 12 to 24 hours. Meanwhile, you can simply leave your Skype client running and as soon as the issue is resolved, you will be logged in. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Now if you work in IT, you might be wondering how the hell can a software issue cause a 24 hours outage! And if you work in software engineering, you might also be praying for this kind of outage never happen to you...
Anyway. If you use Skype for Instant Messaging, you might also want to take the opportunity to switch to jabber, and use a free protocol (free as in "free man", not "free beer") and a single client software (such as pidgin) to IM all your contacts, whether they use msn, yahoo messenger or whatever else.
Have a nice one !
**** EDIT 20AUG07 *****
Of course, Skype has resumed normal service now

And personally, I still find it difficult to believe that this caused a 2 days outage...
I'd say a very simple incoming connexion requests throttle mechanism would be sufficient to return service in a maximum of a few hours. But anyway... still interesting to read ;)
