Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
It was alright. It's what you'd expect, and good fun for a night out. A little more cut & dry, and by the book than the 3rd one, which isn't a bad thing. Still, doesn't compare to the first though.
Water for Elephants
As far as grass-is-greener movies go (that's what I call chick-flicks with the classic premise of "dump the loser you''ve got and go be with your true love") it was good. But really, the reason I'm writing this is to make mention of Christoph Waltz. He does such a great job as the bad guy. As was the case in Inglorious Bastards, he was without a doubt my favourite part of the movie. There were a few moments I was confused as I tried to figure out what accent he was trying to pull off; but he's so good, I was able to forgive those times his accent felt a little uneven. He can even make you forget that you're supposed to be watching a love story ;) Although I'd never sit down to watch it alone, it is a great movie for a date night.
Cars 2
Saw this one with the kids of course. It has the fun and excitement one would expect from a Pixar movie, but there are some elements missing. I find it lacks the depth, particular the emotional level, that many other Pixar Movies have. I'm also not a fan of Mater being the main character, but it makes sense. It's definitely a movie that was made for the kids, not to mention that the Cars franchise is a toy machine.
The Green Hornet
I forgot I had seen this movie, until Seth Rogen's face appeared on TV. I think that's a good reflection of the movie itself. It wasn't the worst super-hero movie I've ever seen, and there were some moments that did have me chuckling, but it's not particularly memorable either. But, Christoph Waltz is in this one as well, and again, he was a pleasure to watch. Seth Rogen not so much. I was never really a fan of his, and this movie didn't change that opinion.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo / The Girl Who played with Fire / The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest
So let me group these three movies together. The first one is my favourite of the 3. I felt it had the best story, the most going on in it, and the Murder Mystery feel was nice. The 2nd and 3rd movies were still good, but the feeling you got from them lacked the intensity of the first. The 2nd was more of a man-hunt style movie, and the second was a hospital-drama/court-case mix. Nothing wrong with those types of movies, I just didn't feel as impressed by the execution of them. Still, overall a good series that's worth watching, if you don't mind subtitles.
Skyline
It's actually not the worst alien-takeover movie out there, but it's very shallow. Some of the action scenes were mildly enjoyable, but I have no desire to sit through them again. You know how some people say that a video game their playing is cinematic; it feels like they're playing through a movie? This movie felt more like an average video game from the early 90's. A ridiculous premise we just have to take for granted with characters you really care nothing about, and inexplicable consequences of the alien actions including a human achieving super powers because of a light, that affects no one else in the same way. But (and here's a spoiler) despite a few battles lost in the movie I get the impression at the end they won the war. That's not something you see happen very often, and for me it was the best part of the story.
