Windows 11 and Adobe Photoshop Elements
Hello everybody.

I need some advice about Adobe Photoshop elements and Windows 11. We are in the process of upgrading our computer to Windows 11, and my version Photodhop is not compatible. I need some advice as to what to do.

I am not very computer literate, so please try to express advice in an easy to understand way. I know there is a free version, but I have been advised against it. I also know that I can pay a monthly payment to get a compliant Photoshop, and I know that I can buy it outright. What is the best way in your opinion?

I also know that there is a free editing software package called Gimp, which I have been advised not to bother with. I have been receiving lots of mixed messages from 'professionals' from the computer shop, and from Jessops - a camera shop. I don't use a laptop at all, so out new system, like our current system, will be a tower.

Thank you, Uwe. I have asked both computer experts and photography experts. No-one agrees with anyone else! So I have come to the Ipernity community. I don't know what Photoshop version I am using unfortunately, so your advice on version CS6 and CS2 is meaningless to me. All I can say is that the version I use is is a very basic, Adobe Photoshop Elements. I sometimes go onto the Internet to look at ways to achieve particular challenges, but I don't have many of the applications that are advised, so I just do the best with what I have.

Amelia, I have the subscription version of Photoshop. It may seem horrendously expensive but it updates itself frequently and some of its latest features are simply staggering. It works well with Windows 11. There is also a free version which work on an iphone, but that's fiddly compared to using it on a desktop. I am not sure what version you are referring to being able to buy outright, as they switched to a subscription offering some considerable time ago.

I have looked at the free version, which is at the same level as that which I am using; but another photographer said it was 'glitchy' using Windows 11. I only use Photoshop to deal with any photographs that I take on my relatively new Samsung smartphone, which I am informed is 5G ready, not that I have the vaguest idea what that means. I only bought the phone as I am now using Bluetooth hearing aids and that allows me to hear family phone calls. I used to use our landline with the loop system, but BT have cancelled that option.

How does the subscription method work? You are the second person to recommend it, but I cannot be bothered to remember to pay the fee of £10 per month - if I cannot use a Standing Order. Do you get reminders of when the payment is due?

I'm facing the same problem, I have Lightroom and PS Elements in old standalone versions which won't run on Win11.

I will probably keep my old laptop with Win10 and will use it strictly offline for photo editing.
Of course I'll have to transfer the photos I want to post via USB stick or external hard drive. I'm keeping several backups on 2-3 extrernal drives anyway so it won't be too much extra work.

btw- I have tested using Lightroom offline, it works, even with the plugins (Silver Efex pro)!
I'll yet have to test PS Elements which I rarely use.

Anyway, I'm not willing to buy a subscription:-) Should I want new editing software I'll look for something European.

I believe Light-room is good, but I don't have that option set up on our desk top. Everything technological seems to be running away from me at the moment, but I suppose that being 83, and a Luddite to boot is the reason.

Also my first introduction to computers was way back in the late 50s when I had to write a programme using ALGOL to compute the 2x table using a computer that took up quite a lot of wall space - bigger than a wardrobe. I got a printed piece of paper that showed the 2x table up to including 2x12. and lost all faith in computer technology from that moment onwards for many many years, assuming that computers were no better at doing things than a normal child of 5 or 6. ;-))

I have never caught up with it all.

The other problem that I encountered, but have now solved, is the fact that my newish camera, a much lighter weight than my beloved Canon, will no longer plug into a USB port to download photos. I was distraught for over 24 hours until someone informed me that I could use just the memory card from the camera, using a special card reader that could be plugged into a USB port.

No wonder I have not had time to download photos and post then on Ipernity or even visit the photos of others.

I am having sleepless nights. ;-))))

My first programming language was also Algol 60. Programming was something I was good at unlike most other subjects at school and college. That’s good you found out about the USB card reader solution I have used that process for a long time.

I have invested a lot of time (and money) using Lightroom so I will stick to that. My use of Photoshop is so infrequent that feel I have to start to learn it all over again!

I have now invested in a Photodhop Elements: Photoshop Elements 2025

Create photos you’ll love to share.
3-year term licence

£86.99

That works out to less than £30 per annum, and I am completely happy about that. Thank you all for your input.

That sounds like a good decision. Why change without a real reason to do so. I have stayed with Adobe for another year I pay the annual fee to have all the latest on desktop and mobile but each year I wonder about it as there is so much included that I have either made little use of a none BUT I tell myself but I might use it this year. I have a bigger decision in the coming months as I am scrapping my Windows PC before Windows 10 updates end. I really don’t think I am going to by a Windows system again but will I ?

We are getting used to Windows 11 now, and are reassured byt the level of safety we have. How long that will last ios anybody's guess. I am now having trouble with online banking. I can no longer just state my mother's maiden name and the place of my birth to log in. ;-)))
