The City of Helsinki-owned energy firm Helen has been shutting down operations at the Hanasaari coal-powered, district heating plant on the 1th of April 2023. The powerplant has been in use for 50 years.
Estimates foresee the coal plant's shutdown will cut the city's emissions by up to 20 percent and cut national emissions by two percent.
A historical moment.

Helsinki is much further than we are, in our neighbourhood we don't even yet have district heating, it's still mostly gas:-(

As Isabel says it's a difficult area finding solutions - electric cars "too heavy, hugely expensive batteries which no-one can find a way to recycle after a very short life", solar panels "shut down when they overheat when the temperature is too high and again no way to recycle. Unfortunately the UK having decommissioned some old nuclear reactors are about to start up new ones; Hinkley just up from me has had it's first reactor delivered and another will follow soon; where I won't bother with the problems of waste disposal they create.

I would imagine that shutting down a huge powerplant like this will be a mammoth task, but well worth it in the end.
