Collared

I could hardly believe my luck when, viewed with a zoom lens, a bird in our driveway turned out to be a Collared Sparrowhawk (Accipiter cirrhocephalus) and its freshly captured meal. My bird guide book tells me these are found across Australia, but are uncommon. I had time for only this shot before it left, taking its meal with it.

Explored.

From the tail feathers, it looks like this hawk has killed a woodpecker.

Thanks, Amelia, though we don't have woodpeckers in Australia. I've now done a little homework and suspect it may have been a Grey Fantail.

You were luckier than the poor bird on the ground George!
We had a sparrowhawk in the garden last year, so I stopped feeding the small birds for a while.

WOW WOW WOW!! What incredible luck, George! :D I have been lucky enough to see a few birds of prey on our feeders but it's not common and always fantastic when there is a camera nearby to capture the proof! Nice shot, grats on the sighting! :)
