Eine Besandungsanlage eines ehemaligen Bahnbetriebswerks
Für einen störungsfreien Eisenbahnbetrieb ist eine ausreichende Haftreibung zwischen Rad und Schiene notwendig. Dampflokomotiven verfügten deshalb über Sandkästen (meistens zwei, auf dem Kesselscheitel). Diese wurden mit Hilfe von Besandungsanlagen gefüllt. Zum Besanden gab es entweder eine Besandungsanlage mit Hochbunker oder einen Besandungsturm. Der spezielle Sand wurde in einem eigenen Vorratslager aufbewahrt. Bei einem Besandungsturm wurde ein Teleskoprohr in den Sandkasten eingeklinkt, die Verriegelung gelöst und dann wurde der Sandkasten der Lokomotive je nach Bedarf gefüllt. Alle Betriebswerke hatten einen Sandvorrat für mindestens 30 Tage vorzuhalten.
