I met a Ukrainian on the cross channel ferry a couple of years ago. He was cycling(!) home to spend a couple of weeks with his wife and family - turns out he was working at the new reactor being built a few miles from where I live (small world). He was such a nice chap, I can’t remember his name but I think of him and his family often and so hope they are safe.

I actually know (or observe) quite a lot of Ukrainians living and working in my little town since 2014. Women and men. Hardworking, polite, blending in perfectly with our community.
It breaks my heart to see any of them with red eyes because it usually means bad news from their homeland.

I knew a few Ukranian students, together with some Russian ones, at university (I went to SSEES - The School of Slavonic and Eastern European Studies, now part of University College, London), in the late 70s and they were very much all friends together and all were (unofficially of course) anti the then Soviet regime. I often wonder what became of them all!
Marta Wojtkowska replied to Andy Rodker:
The School of Slavonic and Eastern European Studies was certainly a platform where students could mingle.
In late 70s?
Their children and (maybe) grandchildren are either scattered around the world or trying to survive or fighting... How sad :(
