Druid Statue (Close up) (+PiP)

Taken in Priory Park, Chichester, West Sussex. No one seems to know who the statue was supposed to be, although some people have speculated in might be of Noah. There is a plaque on the base of the statue with an inscription, which reads:

"This statue stood formerly on the conduit in South Street and was afterwards for many years in the cathedral vault of Mr William Guy, surgeon, the pupil of John Hunter and the friend of Hayley and Flaxman. it was presented to the Priory Park society by his grandson Dr William Augustus Guy of Kings College London and erected on this spot may 31 1873."

Nowadays the general consensus seems to be that it is a statue of an unknown Druidic figure. My personal theory is that it is a statue of Gandalf the Wizard :-)))

There is a view of the complete statue in the PiP.

I like the combination of the stone and the Autumn leaves in the pip my first thought was Neptune I have no idea why. I wonder if it was carved by a mason who wanted to show off his work a sort of test piece

Keith Burton replied to Peter Castell:

Glad you like these Peter.............I can sort of see why Neptune would spring to mind, but he would normally be carrying a trident! Whoever he was, he looks very impressive.

Thanks for commenting.

Keith Burton replied to David G Johnson:

Yes, he does look pretty wise, doesn't he? I'm guessing he must have been someone important, but his ID seems to have been lost in the mist of time!

Whoever it is, it's beautifully carved and your theory is as good as any ;-)) Wonderful detail Keith but wow, what a fabulous PiP!! The backdrop of autumn leaves is spectacular and nice to see the whole statue. I've just looked full screen again and saw the single leaf on the shoulder....a lovely touch!
