Figo de Piteira
The Prickly Pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) is a species of plant in the Cactaceae family, native to Mexico, which has naturalized in other continents, notably the Mediterranean basin, in South Africa and North Africa. It is one of the two species producing the edible fruit called prickly pear. Live red, it is ripe.
Nowadays the plant is cultivated in many countries, notably in Morocco, Mexico, Algeria, Tunisia, the United States, Chile, South Africa, Greece, Israel, Turkey, Italy ( Sicily, Sardinia, Puglia), Portugal... In many of these countries, it is called "devil's fig" or more often "Indian fig" (karmous l'hendi or hendia, in Arabic).
