The red truck is just perfect against the blue and green.

... but 'The London ... what?

John FitzGerald replied to Andy Rodker:

Thanks, Andy. That's the London Free Press. In my younger days it used to bill itself on the masthead as "Western Ontario's foremost newspaper", but no longer.

This has to be suburbia. Without that red pickup truck it would be vacant. Blank (back of) signs, half readable ones, a dirty, unsold newspaper. This should be a painting - it would get rave reviews. As a photo, maybe also, but not by the locals methinks.

John FitzGerald replied to rdhinmn:

Thanks, Bob. It seems to me that painters are increasingly using photographic composition -- for example, painting from points of view a painter with an easel could not possibly use. So painting is becoming more and more like cheating. I would have liked the truck to be about three feet to the right but snapped too soon. A painter can just arbitrarily move it.

Composition, color, textures, symbols, quintessential Americana. This is a painting -- just call it "photorealism."

John FitzGerald replied to Sarah P.:

Thanks, Sarah. As I mentioned to Bob, painters seem to be using photographic composition more and more. So painting is increasingly becoming fake photography.
