Thanks, y'all! I like your associative notion, Tim. I went through a lot of different words and phrases before choosing that one. I like the way that "I'm listening" is double-edged: it can be a warm statement of having open ears, but it can also be like a parent challenging a child, in a stern tone, to account for something they've done wrong. Maybe that second sense, suggested by the all caps, is part of where you got the "unsettling toyroom" from.
