Bench in the shade of Trumpan Church, Waternish Peninsula, Skye, Scotland
In 1578 the MacDonalds of Uist arrived by boats, under cover of the fog and locked the congregation of MacLeods in the church, setting fire to the roof. All but one perished. The alarm was raised and the MacLeods killed all the invaders in the Battle of the Spoling Dyke. It is said they were able to exact revenge on the MacDonalds when they unfurled and waved the MacLeod Fairy Flag.
There are several legends regarding the origin of the flag, one of which was that it was a gift to an infant child of a MacLeod Chieftan, and yet another was that it was given to a MacLeod chieftain by his fairy lover when she had to return home. Another suggests it was a gift from Titania, the wife of Oberon the fairy king. It was said that once the flag had been unfurled three times the magic, the flag and the holder of the flag would disappear forever.
