Taken from above Birnbeck Island at Weston Super Mare, with a view of the sadly dilapidated Birnbeck Pier viewed from this well positioned bench. It was, as you can see, a cold and grey day but I liked the sky and the shape of the windblown tree.
The pier, designed by Eugenius Birch first opened in 1867. As a child I remember a steam trip taken from here. Weston Lifeboat Staton was housed here from the late 1880s. Over the years there have been many plans to restore this iconic and once beautiful pier but they have come to nothing.
However, there are now plans afoot to save the pier and eventually rehouse the lifeboat station here. These plans look far more promising with Historic England, the RNLI and North Somerset Council involved. Hey this time I am a believer, so sit with me and you too can be a daydream believer!
What else can I add but 'Daydream Believer. by the Monkees, - more nostalgia for me as the Monkees show was a must watch for me as a young teenager and one of my first records was a Monkees song.
